Device Manager is an operating system feature that lets you view and change the properties of all devices attached to your computer. To get access to the Device Manager in your Windows operating system, right click on the 'My computer' icon, choose properties, then click on the Device Manager tab. Then, from there you can select from a variety of management options. Device Manager is found in both Windows 95 and higher operating system versions and in the Macintosh PC platforms. Windows XP contains an improved Device Manager which helps in detecting the plug-and-play hardware and displays a large list of supported hardware.

Role of Device Manager
The Device Manager is a Control Panel applet mainly in the Microsoft Windows based operating systems. It helps the users to view and to control the hardware devices that are attached to the computer. When you find that a hardware device is not working, the offending hardware is highlighted for the user to deal with. Also the list of hardware can be sorted by various criteria.
From 'My Computer'
You can easily navigate to the Device Manager by right clicking on the 'My computer' icon and then properties and Device Manager. By the Device Manager you can install a plug and play device, such as a flash drive or a USB mouse. You will need to connect the device to the computer then in Device Manager, click on 'Scan for Hardware Changes' in the 'Action' menu. The Device Manager alerts you about hardware problems with an icon to identify it.
You need to click on ther 'Start' button in your Windows XP system, click on 'Run', and then type in 'mmc'. This will open up the Microsoft Management Console, then you need to click on the File menu, and then on the 'Add/ Remove Snap in', Click 'Add,' and then click Device Manager.
