Windows® XP Password Recovery
How to recover or reset a password in Windows® XP?
If one forgets the Windows® XP log on password or if the password expires, then the password must be reset to log on to the system. There are two techniques for resetting the password in Windows® XP. These can be used only if a password reset disk was earlier created for the computer or if a new password can be created by logging on as administrator. If these two methods cannot be used, you may have to reinstall Windows® XP and other applications on the computer.
The methods for recovering or resetting a password in Windows® XP are discussed in the following points.
- Using the password hint option
- Using the password reset disk
- Reset the password by logging on as an administrator
Using the password hint option
On entering the password, if you get the error message “Wrong password”, check that you typed all the letters in the correct case as passwords are case sensitive. You can remember a forgotten password by checking the password hint on the Welcome screen. On clicking the question mark next to the user account, the hint is displayed. The hint might help you in remembering the password. While changing passwords, it is recommended that one should set a password hint as a precautionary measure.
Using the password reset disk
Click the user name on the logon screen and press ‘Enter’. If you get the error message “Did you forget your password?” click on the option “Use your password reset disk”. The Password Reset Wizard dialog box will appear. Click ‘Next’ and insert the password reset disk into the CD drive. You will be prompted to type the new password and confirm it by entering the password again. Click ‘Finish’ and you will be able to log on to Windows® XP.
Restart the computer and press the ‘Ctrl’, ‘Alt’, and ‘Delete’ keys twice. Enter the administrator user account name and password. Click on ‘Run’ in the ‘Start’ menu. Type “Control userpasswords2” and click ‘OK’. Click the name of the user account for which you want to reset the password. Click ‘Reset password’ and type the new password. Confirm the new password by again entering the password. This will reset the password of that user. You can now restart the system and log on to Windows® XP.
