What are the tips to customize icons in Windows® XP?
Icons are one of the important aspects for the smooth operation of a graphical user interface. The Windows® operating systems have got icons categorized as folder and file icons. The various types of icons have definite roles and definite significance. The icons could be customized as per the requirement of the user.

Customize folder icon
There are various types of icons on a system, however, each one has a different image. If you wish to customize the folder icon then right click on it and click on the option which says ‘Properties.’ After you click on ‘Properties,’ a window will appear with change icon box. Click on it and browse to the desired icon, open it and click on ‘OK.’ The folder icon is now changed.
Customize file icon
File type icons need administrator rights to be changed. To customize them, click on ‘Start’, go to ‘Control Panel’, then click ‘Appearance and Themes,’ now click on the ‘Folder’ option. In the ‘Folder’ option, click on ‘Files’ tab, select the file type and click on ‘Advanced,’ in the ‘Edit file type,’ then click on ‘Change icon’, browse to the changed icon and click ‘Ok.’
The quick launch bar is located on the desktop and gives quick access to icons to be rapidly used. To customize the quick launch bar icon, right click on the icon and click on ‘Properties.’ Click on the ‘Shortcut’ tab, click on ‘Change icon’ and browse to the icon. Click on ‘Open’ and click ‘OK.’
The default desktop icons are ‘My computer,’ ‘Recycle bin’ and ‘My documents.’ However to change them, one requires administrative rights. To customize default desktop icons, click on ‘Start,’ then got to ‘Control panel,’ click ‘Appearance and themes,’ click on ‘Change the desktop background,’ click on the ‘Desktop’ tab. In the desktop properties select the icons and the change the icons respectively. If the icons do not display, click on ‘Browse’ and ‘Change icons.’ Once done click on ‘Desktop properties,’ and click on ‘OK.’
Right click on the desktop and click on ‘Show desktop icons.’ If the icons are already displaying on the desktop, right click on the desktop and under ‘View,’ uncheck the ‘Show desktop icons.’ Icons that are hidden are not deleted; they can be retained when need. To resize the icons on the desktop, right click on the desktop, select ‘Properties, and in the ‘Appearance’ tab, click on ‘Advanced.’ In the ‘Item’ drop-down menu, select ‘Icon.’ Now you can increase or decrease the size of the icons as desired.
