How to customize the Windows Vista sidebar?
The Windows Vista sidebar, which is displayed on your desktop, helps to organize your gadgets. Gadgets are mini programs that provide information at a glance. They help us to easily run the frequently accessed tools. Gadgets display information like news, pictures, clock, weather, phases of the moon, games, picture puzzles, etc. In Windows Vista, gadgets are displayed in the sidebar. If you drag a gadget towards the corner of your desktop, it fits neatly into place, giving a streamlined look. If open dialogue boxes are getting on the way of your gadgets then you can use Peek to display the window instantly. Peek gives a different vision like an X-ray vision so that you can see all the open windows transparent on your Windows Vista desktop. You can personalize the sidebar in Windows Vista. There are several ways to personalize Windows Vista sidebar. One is by keeping the sidebar on top of other window, by adding or removing gadgets from it, removing gadgets and placing them on the desktop.

Add and remove gadgets
If you prefer to add multiple instances of a gadget you can go ahead and do it. If you would like to keep track of time in two time zones you could add two instances of the clock and set each clock accordingly. To add a gadget you need to right click on the sidebar to click on “Add gadgets” by double clicking on it you could add a new gadget very easily. Similarly if you need to remove a gadget, right click on the gadget and click on “Close gadget”.
Installing and uninstalling gadgets
If you prefer to find more interesting gadgets you could search the Microsoft gadgets website. You can also search the Windows Live Gallery website to download a wide variety of gadgets ranging from games to productivity tools. In order to protect your computer you should make sure that you are downloading the gadgets from a trusted source. In order to uninstall a gadget you need to click on the plus sign at the top of the sidebar to open the gadget gallery and then click on the gadget to click on “uninstall”.
If you would like to build your own custom gadgets you can build it easily. For example, in a company a network administrator would like to remind the employees about downloading important software updates, a game enthusiast might build a gadget which displays online players list etc.
If you would like to resize the gadget, unfortunately you have no option to do it as the size of the sidebar is fixed as it appears. But the gadgets will appear larger once they are detached and placed on the desktop. In order to detach the gadget you need to click on the gadget you want to detach and then click “Detach from sidebar”. Detach
