File systems in Windows® 2000
Which are the file systems in a Windows 2000 computer?
All the computers possess a file system for the purpose of organizing the information. The Windows 2000 computers also support various file systems such as FAT, FAT32, NTFS, EFS, UDF and CDFS. Among these, file systems that are commonly used are FAT and NTFS. FAT includes FAT16 and FAT32, which support 16-bit and 32-bit cluster addresses respectively. These file systems are commonly used for file storage and manipulation purposes. Each of the file systems has special features along with limitations. The NTFS is the standard file system used by the users of Windows 2000 operating system since it can access and use the other file systems. It offers better support for various features like encryption, partition, filenames, file compression, etc.
Discussed below are some features of file systems:
- Support for partitions
Support for partitions
The FAT file systems allow 4 GB support for the partitions. The VFAT or FAT32, even though not supported natively on the Windows 2000 systems, would support upto 32 GB of partitions. The NTFS file systems allow the volumes (remote or local) to mount on different partitions like they are mounting upon the same partitions. The file system also provides sector spacing.
The FAT file system does not provide any space for the filenames. However, the FAT32 file names support up to 255 characters long file names. The features for the file names include insertion of spaces, letters as the first character, and exclusion of some special symbols. In the case of the NTFS file system, the features are sustained along with some additional options like preserving case, only exclude some characters, support for the built in file compression, etc.
The partitions on the Windows 2000 computers-based on FAT does not provide local security. But the share level security over the network is enabled on such partitions. The security option provided by the NTFS file systems includes automatic transaction tracking of disk utility, support for encrypting files with the help of EFS file system, and Access Control List (ACL) for objects.
