Troubleshooting Skype Video not Working Issue
Is the Skype video not working on your computer? Try troubleshooting the problem by following these simple steps.
But, before you start following the steps to troubleshoot the Skype video not working issue, download the latest version of Skype on your system. This will make sure that all the latest bug fixes and patches are installed in the application before you start using it.
Here are the troubleshooting steps:
Checking the Drivers:
Check for the latest version of drivers and do a Windows update. Also ensure that the webcam you are using supports at least DirectShow 9.1 standard. To check the present driver version, go to ‘Control Panel’, then ‘System and Device Manager’. Right-click on the device and click on ‘Properties’ and then click on the ‘Driver’ tab; the driver date will be shown here. Now, click on ‘Update Driver’ and then search over the Internet for the latest version of the driver. For manually updating the driver, check the company name under the Copyright in Driver Details and then you can download the driver yourself by downloading from the manufacturer’s website. Also, download the latest version of DirectX software. Click on Run and then in the Command Prompt that appears, type “dxdiag” to check the DirectX version.
Ensure Proper Configuration of Skype:
If the video still doesn’t work after updating the drivers, then check the Skype video settings to ensure that it is properly configured. To do so, open Skype, then click on ‘Tools and Options’. The video settings will be under Calls or General. If the dialog box opens, which says that “Skype is not able to find a webcam”, then reinstall the software of the webcam and switch it ‘ON’. After the webcam is switched ‘ON’, you have to restart Skype so that the active webcam is recognized.
Now, under “Automatically receive video”, change the settings to “People in my contact list only”. Also, under “Show that I have video to”, change it to “People in my contact list’.
Ensure that you are not Hidden:
Ensure that the “Hide Myself” or “Stop My Video” is not selected while you are trying to video chat with your friend. The video streaming will be blank if these options are selected. To check the settings, simply right-click on the blank video window.
Ensure No Other Program is using your Webcam:
Also make sure that no other program in your system is using the webcam. Sometimes, many applications like Instant Messengers and Internet browsers use the webcam integration. Hence, to rectify this, you need to close down all the other programs that are using the webcam and then restart Skype.
If you have used all the options and still there’s a problem in the video, ask your friend with whom you are trying to video chat, to check the settings in his/ her Skype application. It could be possible that he/ she’s having some problem with the Skype setup in their computer because of which they are unable to see your video.
