Remove dual operating systems

What are the things to keep in mind while removing a dual operating system? Why should one use a dual operating system?

If you have two copies of Windows XP, or two different Operating Systems, and then you end up with a dual boot machine when you restart your Windows XP computer. Dual boot means the system will give you a choice of two Operating Systems. Dual boot machine could be used to have more than one Operating System installed on the same computer. If you have two Operating Systems on the same hard disk, you will be experiencing a slow performance in your system. So, you need to delete one Operating System. When you start your system you get a choice of two Operating Systems. You should choose the one you want to keep installed on your machine. After the startup process is done, and your computer is ready to accept tasks to perform certain functions, click on the “My Computer” icon and locate the hard disks, removable storage devices, and more.

The things to keep in mind while removing a dual operating system are:
  • Back up all vital data
  • Boot the computer into Windows
  • Select the hard drive

Back up all vital data

It is really important to perform a backup of all vital data on your Windows partition using any method that you prefer. It is a necessary step in case any possible problems with the partition removal process occurs and your important data is lost. So, it is highly recommended to backup all the relevant data. The Windows installation disc should be placed in your disc drive and reboot your computer with it.

Boot the computer into Windows

By exiting the installer and typing fixmbr command get into a DOS prompt. The command will repair the bootloader, which in turn removes any excess boot options and restores your computer to a single boot status. Find the option for Administrative Tools by opening the control panel and then Computer Management.

Select the hard drive

Find out the disk management under the Storage Tab. Then select your hard drive and then the partition that the other operating system is using. You should be completely sure this is not your Windows partition! If you delete that, it will prevent your computer from booting at all. Now delete that partition, allow the process to complete. You should test the process by shutting down the PC and then rebooting. The system should boot without the query screen, and the hard drive should now be a single partition. Now the dual boot removal is complete.
