Temporary files are the files created by the computer programs in various cases, such as while dealing with data bigger than architectures address space, if cannot allocate enough memory for tasks, etc. It is a file created along the original file to hold the information of original one. Most temporary files end with the extension .TMP. Many programs create temporary files. The name of the temporary files or the location where it resides, etc. will give a clue about the applications which have created them.
Creation of temporary files
While saving a file, Microsoft Excel saves it as a temporary file with name starting with a tilde (~). If the save is successful, then Microsoft Excel deletes the original file or sometimes changes it into a backup file and then renames the temp file to its original name. When you open an existing file, Microsoft Excel creates a temporary file for it and deletes it when Microsoft Excel quits normally.
Temporary files can be used for the backup processes. When a program or computer is abnormally halted, you can recover the data with the help of temporary files. In the backup process, while the original file is open the program saves a version of temp files in every few minutes.
